Headland - 93 Feet East, Brick Lane, London Jan 25th
After missing the support acts while we were swapping rock n roll stories in the upstairs bar, we trundled downstairs just in time to catch the main attraction. Headland pull a fair crowd round their stomping ground of London. And have recently been getting airplay on XFM. Look out for second album soon.

The repetitive, moronic drumming and jerky guitars remind me of maybe the Fall or Joy Division, but not as cold, maybe more Kaiser-friendly-Ferdinand-like, so there's certainly something post punk/ post Britpop about them. The super charged snare with extra boom shook the room with fantastic grace while Tom the frontman danced like a slightly sedated Tim Booth in a f**ked up clockwork toy kinda way.  All dressed in collars and ties (except the girly keyboard player), but all managed to match with white shoes - what's going on there then?!?

Their first album I am told by their ex-bassist is more melodic with whispery vocals - he likened them to OMD, but this new venture down Hard Edged Street is certainly a popular address at present with the rise of jerky angular pop, so may well be a wise move. Location, location, location.

The beats and spiky guitar are impressive, think Planet Claire B-52s, Factory Records, think industrial London, think the end of Bliarpop, think Headland!

Half an hour set or half a dozen or more tunes and they leave the building....
no encore tonight ... will we hear from them again ...? Well watch this space!
