What is the Gulbenkian prize?
The Gulbenkian Prize for museums and galleries, now in its fifth year, is the largest single arts prize in the UK and recognises and rewards the best new development of the previous calendar year in a museum or gallery, large or small, anywhere in the United Kingdom.
How does it work? Initially there are ten long-listed museums and art galleries in line to win the £100,000 prize money. In March, a short-list of four nominees will be chosen by a panel of judges, and then the winner of the prize will be announced on 24th May 2007.
Why has Pallant House Gallery been long-listed for the prize? Pallant House Gallery, Chichester has been long-listed for the Gulbenkian Prize 2007 for the imaginative development of its Grade 1 listed Queen Anne townhouse, located within a conservation area of a Cathedral city, to embrace a contemporary new wing. The renovated and extended Gallery now uses innovative geothermal heating technology, ensures the opportunity to continue the Gallery’s pioneering education and outreach projects, and provides room to display one of the best collections of modern British art anywhere in the world.
Artists & Makers are pleased to be a supporting partner for Pallant House Gallery.
Who decides who will win the prize this year? This year, the panel of judges are: Tristram Besterman, Richard Calvocoressi, Jonathan Glancey, Dr Mark Miodownik, Dan Snow, Francine Stock, Mohini Sule
