COURAGE-ous Exhibition at Worthing Church
Film, video art and exciting installation alongside an alternative contemporary craft fair and a night of live music put a Worthing church centre stage during July's Artists + Makers Festival.

COURAGE has been taking place in the dramatic surroundings of St Matthew's, Tarring Road, Worthing for three years. And this year's exhibition includes videos by artist Nathan Bean, photography by Phil Clarke-Hill, installation by Ingrid Plum and work from a further six artists. But this year, the exhibition of installation, sculpture, photography and digital artwork is joined by three new events. The whole event is open from 7-9pm on Friday 13th July and 10am-5pm on Saturday 14th July, and the other events will take place around the main exhibition in the church.

Roundabout is the Revolutionary Arts Group's performance club, which took a holiday in 2006. It returns from 7-9pm on Friday 13th, when Russ Bravo will play a set of very short songs, and Pete Fijalkowski (formerly lead singer with Adorable and Polak) will perform an acoustic set. The Graham Coxon-esque Ben Salter, poet Dan Thompson and odd, wistful and acoustic act The Gloaming will complete the Friday night line up.

On Saturday from 10am-5pm, the Revolutionary Arts Group launch I Made This - a new alternative arts and crafts market. "Don't expect the traditional here" says Festival director Dan Thompson, "this is full of punky prints, badges for emo kids, boho jewellery, fanzines and other artist-made ephemera." I Made This features work from the Revolutionary Arts Group, Manifesto Gallery and Lucky Dip Collective - and artists from Worthing, Brighton and Hastings. There will also be plants for sale in the gardens outside, with local group The Healing Garden.

Completing the line up is the first COURAGE Film & Video Festival, with a programme of short films and videos showing throughout the day on Saturday. They include work by the exhibition's curator Nathan Bean, and Animated Worthing - an alternative history of Worthing by students at Oak Grove College who worked with Brighton-based Carousel Arts and Junk TV.

On the same day, the Artists + Makers Festival also includes the Kaleidoscope of Threads at the Heene Centre, Worthing; over 100 artists in thirty open houses and studios across Worthing and Horsham District; the Photography Open at Worthing Museum & Art Gallery and open-air Shakespeare at Highdown Gardens.
