One of the most exciting arts events in West Sussex is back - and artists' open houses & studios from RAG will prove for the fourth year running that the best art can be found on the street where you live.
RAG artists Dan & Tracey Thompson founded the Worthing Art Trail in 2001, with just five artists' open houses including those of printmaker Clive Vosper and painter Brenda Brooks. Other venues taking part in the inaugural event included Doyles Caf, the Northbrook College Gallery and Henry House. By the next year, artists' open houses & studios were being described as the biggest hit of the Worthing Fringe.
RAG has continued to help artists to run the successful open houses and studios since then, featuring established artists like Nick Orsborn (pictured, top). Due to the overwhelming success of the event, there are a few changes this year. These include a new name, Artists & Makers, which was chosen to say exactly what the event is about.
But the biggest change is that, thanks to a grant from Horsham District Council, 2004 will see artists' open houses and studios not just in Worthing, but across the Horsham region, too. Previously, artists from Steyning, Washington, Warnham and Storrington (all in Horsham District) have exhibited in Worthing venues, but artists like Fran White (pictured, left) will now be able to open their own houses or studios.
Weve made a few changes to the organisation, says Tracey Thompson, which means it will be even easier for new houses, studios and other arts groups to join us, and well be able to produce even more guides for visitors to meet the huge demand.
Artists & Makers takes place on Saturday 10th - Sunday 11th and Saturday 17th Sunday 18th July and showcases contemporary arts and crafts at affordable prices. As well as the popular open houses & studios, Artists & Makers will feature live literature, and music events; just as the original Art Trail did. The full-colour guides will be available from late-May.
