This November Carlisle will play host to the very first citywide Open Studios initiative where artists, craftspeople and creative practitioners alike will open their doors to the public; inviting you in to view the work, talk about the ideas, maybe learn a few processes and see working Studios in operation.

The day is happening in correlation with Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery�s latest exhibition, �Sedition - an uprising of Contemporary Artists�. The exhibition inspired Carlisle based artists to organise this one day city-wide event on Saurday 20th November between the 10am � 4pm.

Demons, death and the monstrous Devourer take centre stage at the British Museum�s major Autumn exhibition.

Journey through the afterlife: ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead will exhibit the British Museum�s unparalleled collection of Book of the Dead papyri. The �Book�, used for over 1500 years between c. 1600 BC and 100 AD, is not a single text, but a compilation of spells thought to equip the dead with knowledge and power which would guide them safely through the dangers of the afterlife and ultimately ensure eternal life.

The British Museum has one of the most comprehensive collections of Book of the Dead manuscripts on papyrus in the world, and this exhibition will be the first opportunity to see so many examples displayed together. Due to the fragility of the papyri and their sensitivity to light it is extremely rare for any of these manuscripts to ever be displayed so this is a truly unique opportunity to view them.

An artist is set to explore the basic building blocks of modern life in an empty shop in Shoreham.

Dan Thompson will be curating a collection of objects, artwork and events around the theme of the alphabet. Exhibits will include printing blocks alongside letters from boardgames, interesting examples of typography and old packaging, and a collection of music and sound inspired by the theme.

There will be a library of books, including A-Zs that Dan has collected by artists, writers and designers, with comfortable sofas and fresh coffee. Original artwork inspired by the 26 letters of the Roman alphabet and some giant letters created especially for the exhibition will complete the exhibition.

In her latest project, artist Alice Angus is celebrating Britain's shopkeepers.

Working with traders in Lancaster and in partnership with Lancaster District Chamber of Commerce, Storey Gallery and Lancaster University, Mid Pennine Arts commissioned Alice for As It Comes, the latest project in the Talking Shop programme. Talking Shop engages creative practitioners to work with independent businesses to document, celebrate and highlight their importance as hubs of the local community.

Test Bed is an experimental exhibition space dedicated to emerging art and artists from Wales and the Border regions. As part of an ongoing exhibition program organisers are developing a project that aims to highlight the creative conversation taking place between Art and Science and the potential of collaboration.

A new exhibition pairs iconic portraits of British artists by Vogue photographer John Deakin with major paintings by each artist, providing a unique view of post-war British art and the artistic bohemia of London�s Soho.

Artists and subjects include Michael Andrews, Francis Bacon, John Craxton, Lucian Freud, John Minton, and Eduardo Paolozzi.

Until recently John Deakin has been missing from photographic history. His career began with Vogue but, despite achieving recognition for the photographs he took there he never took it seriously and never expected it to make him a living. Deakin�s bad behaviour was legendary and he remains the only staff photographer in the magazine�s history to be hired and fired twice by the same admiring but exasperated editor.

Deakin yearned to be a painter like his friends Francis Bacon, Robert Colquhoun, Lucian Freud and Michael Andrews.

There's more interventionist madness at Chichester's Pallant House Gallery this autumn.

Contemporary Eye: Crossovers, is a series of interventions in the eighteenth-century house and new wing galleries by international contemporary artists exploring traditional craft techniques such as ceramics, glass, textiles, wood carving, and taxidermy. Artists include Grayson Perry, Gary Hume, Edmund de Waal, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and Polly Morgan.

In recent years artists have used craft techniques to make art with a radical or subversive edge. Since Grayson Perry won the Turner Prize in 2003 for his decorated coil-pots, the art world has lost some of its fear and disdain for the word �craft�.

Contemporary Eye: Crossovers celebrates this experimentation, featuring works which challenge associations of twee country craft-shops. Artists such as Grayson Perry, Barnaby Barford and Debbie Lawson re-imagine traditional techniques to bring new meanings to their work.

To coincide with Tullie House�s Sedition Exhibition, Carlisle based artists are collaborating to organise a one day city-wide Open Studios Initiative. On Sat 20th November only, various studio groups within the city will open their doors and invite visitors in to view their work and to see real life working studios in practice.

Preparations are being made for the annual Artwave open house festival.

Taking place across the Lewes district from Saturday 28th August until Sunday 12th September, Artwave showcases art at more than eighty venues.
