Four bands tonight and we start off with ... Flook's Roots Around the World
There are a few things you expect from a folk gig.
Cracking tunes; strange anecdotes and rambling stories between songs; some hearty audience participation; and a mention of 'our friend Rory McLeod'. Flook, playing as part of the Roots Around The World series, deliver them all. The band are a four piece; Sarah Allen on flute and accordian, Ed Boyd on guitar, John Joe Kelly on bodhran and Brian Finnegan on tin whistle and flute. There's almost a fifth member; Sarah has brought eight month old Maisy on tour, and although she's offstage the whole time she gets fairly frequent mentions. Probably The Most Important Art Book This Year
Phaidon's 30,000 Years of Art, a
follow-on from bestseller The Art Book, is an ambitious venture.
It tackles a grand subject the complete history of art, from a carved ivory sculpture c. 28,000 BC to James Turrell's Roden Crater, a massive land art piece in an extinct volcano. The first piece was found in a cave in Southern Germany; the last is a complex, intellectual piece whose location inside a mountain, echoes that earlier work. Drawing For Designers Drawing "makes you pay attention to what you're looking at" says Milton Glaser, "which is not so easy". With Drawing For Designers, you'll be glad to hear, putting pen to paper just got a little bit easier. And not just pen to paper, but stylus to tablet, too.Alan Pipes' book covers the history of design drawing, and provides comprehensive, clearly written information on the process from concept sketches to final production drawings. And Drawing For Designers is a handbook that's not only right up to date, but includes a chapter on the future of the design drawing as well. It's essential reading for anyone involved in the design of 3D product or industrial design, from student to professional, but could also be a useful tool for artists and makers who want to explore new ways of working. Art In Unlikely Places The Revolutionary Arts Group are celebrating success. The group, whose slogan is 'Love Arts', have helped their artists in many ways in recent months, from securing a publishing deal to putting art in a pub. Hove-based painter Paul Munson is set to see his work featured on the covers of ten books in the coming year. The range of titles from Tottel Publishing covers tax and law, and is essential reading for accountants, solicitors and other professionals. Paul's bold abstract paintings are a break from the traditional images used on business books, and were chosen when Sussex-based Tottel Publishing decided to 'shop local' and adopt a softer style. Meanwhile, an artist best known for his controversial videos is showing a series of paintings in a refurbished pub in Worthing. The Wheatsheaf, part of Worthing's 'civic quarter', recently re-opened under new management, and manager Andy Gamble invited the Revolutionary Arts Group to add the finishing touches to the popular pub's new look. The first artist to exhibit is Nathan Bean, showing a range of mixed-media abstract paintings. Nathan has previously exhibited widely in London, Brighton and other venues across the region. And paintings, prints and drawing by three Revolutionary Arts Group members can also be found in the offices of accountancy company Spofforths, part of an ongoing relationship with the business which has branches across Sussex. 'Raphael' from Phaidon When you can use Wikipedia for research, books need something extra to ensure their success - and the first title in a new range from publishers Phaidon has plenty. One of the most important artists of the Renaissance, Raphael's work influenced the course of western art; his paintings are lush, deep and rich, his figures beautiful. Phaidon's new book does them justice; the book itself , wrapped in rich blue silk with gold titles, is elegant, and the colour reproductions inside are perfect. If you want more than mere aesthetics, the accompanying text by Bette Talvacchia, starting with Raphael's origins and early influences and finishing with the extraordinary series of frescoes and portraits of his last phase in Rome, is light and easy to read, but still full of information.
