Creating community celebrations alongside the Cultural Olympiad 2008 2012
An opportunity for arts, festival and event organisers to come together to find out about the Cultural Olympiad 2008 2012 and also about creating exciting and lively community celebrations
Meet colleagues, be inspired by our speakers and take away good ideas about how you can be Ahead of the Game!
You will also hear about plans for Celebrate! West Sussex in the lead-up to 2012 from
Paul Ackerley, West Sussex Creative Producer. We will be joined by Caterina Lorriggio, South East Creative Programmer, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games.
Our speakers will feature extraordinary stories from work with local farmers to events with 50,000 people from West Sussex to the Balkans to the Caribbean.
Speakers include:
Mark Murphy
Award winning director, published writer, filmmaker, movement specialist, teacher and founder/director of Vtol Dance Company. In January 2008 Mark directed the opening night ceremony for the Liverpool '08 Capital of Culture to an estimated audience of 50,000.
Chris Slann and Frankie Goldspink
Chris and Frankie have between them over 40 years experience in developing and sustaining carnival and celebratory arts projects. In Luton they established Britains biggest one-day Carnival'. They currently work with the Isle of Wight Council as Carnival Development Officer and Arts Learning Manager respectively. They have just opened the UKs first dedicated Carnival & Celebratory Arts Learning Centre supporting the development of more then 20 carnivals and international fellowships with Italy, France and the Bahamas.
Simmy Gupta
Simmy created 'Bollywood Steps' for Trafalgar Square in 2004 and choreographed the televised opening of Trafalagar Square in 2003. She also created the Olympic Torch Relay in 2004 with over 300 performers and 1000 children.
Angharad Wynne-Jones
Director of LIFT (London International Theatre Festival). She founded Cake Eaters Productions in Sydney 1989 and as Director of The Performance Space produced hugely successful multi disciplinary and large scale site specific events and festivals. She formed the Melbourne company Chunky Move with Gideon Obarzanek. LIFT is one of the world's leading arts festivals, introducing theatre from over 60 countries to venues and unusual sites across London since 1981.
Case studies from artists, performers and producers:
Ivan Porov
Ivan is an outstanding choral director based in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, and founder member of the Koprivshtitsa international folklore festival. He has inspired and trained hundreds of community choirs and young people in remote Balkan villages developing local singers for international standard performance. He will share his passion for the transformational effect of folk music and its relevance to contemporary life.
Tony Lidington
Tony is a founder member of the only remaining authentic Pierrot troupe in the world who have performed for numerous national events including Royal visits and the opening of the world gymnastics championships. Tonys passion for celebrating the role of light entertainment as an important contemporary cultural form is exemplified in numerous successful community arts projects.
Karen Howard
Rural Arts Development Officer, West Sussex County Council:
"Perhaps the idea of putting a Finnish 'Jimi Hendrix of the accordion world', together with a rare breed organic working farm seems unlikely. This case study will reveal the magic that can emerge when two industries meet and make music! Oxford Sandys meet Kimmo Pohjonen!"
The day will include a networking event led by Lorna Dallas Conte:
Lornas work as an artist and designer maker is integrated with business advice, research and training for the Creative Industries sector.
