A new book celebrating breasts is set to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care, and features work by RAG founder artist Tracey Thompson.

The project, by a team of creative freelances from Cornwall is cheekily titled the Uplifting Book of Breasts and is now nearing completion. It brings together the quirky ideas of artists, illustrators, photographers and writers from the south west and beyond as it takes a celebratory look at the business of boobs.

Journalists Nicola Smith, Jamie Smith and graphic designer Sara Pugh, who work from the Eight Wire studio in Penryn, came up with the concept after Nicola (a schoolfriend of Tracey Thompson) had a breast cancer scare earlier this year.

Looking beyond the painful mental and physical effects of this often fatal disease, the team decided the book should be a celebration of one of the finer aspects of the female form rather than being about the cancer it is helping to fight.

Within a short period of time several published authors, high-profile artists and leading photographers had pledged their help and support. Works created for the book include a serpentine bust sculpture and a glass bowl of nipples which has to be seen to be believed.

The project has been so well received that it has grown from simply a book to include a special launch event, a website (www.upliftingbookofbreasts.com), a week-long exhibition of art and an auction of works.

Thankfully, my experience turned out to be a false alarm, said Nicola who lives in Falmouth, I was extremely anxious while waiting for my results and it was a very sobering insight into what people who dont get a happy result go through. It certainly focused my mind and, when I got the all clear, I decided I wanted to do something positive to help others.

While the book is a celebration of this very special part of the human anatomy it is rooted in a number of very personal traumas and tragedies. One very moving aspect has been the many individuals, contributors and distributors who contacted us with their own experiences of breast cancer. It hasbeen a powerful motivating force for many to get involved in the project.
