Artists from the Revolutionary Arts Group are declaring the sea end of Worthing Pier an independent state for one day only.
The cheeky group, whose slogan is 'Love Arts', are taking part in Worthing Pier Day for the second year - and will be declaring the area around the pier's southern pavilion 'The State of the Art'. Once visitors have got their passport and crossed the border, there will be a range of free arts activities - weather permitting - between 10am and 4pm on Sunday 9th September.
There will be a stage with live music from RAG's Roundabout Club,
cabaret night the Eclectric Ballroom, and Random Rules, Worthing's
independent music store. Poets will make guest appearances throughout
the day. And the Nefertiri Belly Dance Troupe will be appearing at
2.30pm. There will also be six-minute drumming workshops, led by
Celebration Samba, and calypso act The Bamboo Band will end the day's
events with a special Worthing Pier Calypso.
Visual arts will be on show too; with paintings, cards, crafts and
prints from Sheila Guyatt, Sue Harding, Harriet Davies and other
members of the Revolutionary Arts Group. Colourful flags, designed by
artist Dan Thompson and handmade in Bali, will add to the atmosphere.
For children, there will also be a chance to add a drawing to special
Worthing Pier sketchbooks. There will be a traditional seaside
photo-board, allowing visitors to become a bathing beauty by putting
their head through the hole, designed by illustrator Sheila Guyatt. And
there will be expert artist face-painters on hand during the day, too.
"We're giving traditional seaside entertainment a 21st century twist,"
says Revolutionary Arts Group artist Dan Thompson, "with a day packed
full of free, slightly anarchic, end-of-the-pier fun."
Worthing Pier Day is co-ordinated by Worthing Borough Council, with
support from a range of local organisations. 'The State of the Art' is
funded by the Revolutionary Arts Group and supported by Worthing Arts
Council.
