Made In Worthing

[Art, Exploration and Adventure] Worthing, Sussex

17-19 September 2010

Artists, writers and makers explore a seaside town and its stories, past, present and future, looking for the places where things overlap, boundaries blur and it all gets fuzzy.

Unadvertised and unofficial artwork appears in unlikely places, performers play in the streets, and means of mass communication are hijacked to spread a more interesting message.

The festival is a celebration of unlocked creativity, showcasing new work. Don't expect to see things you've seen before.

Alice Angus from London's Proboscis has been exploring Worthing Pier from a sea kayak, producing illustrations and animations. Meanwhile, illustrator Abi Daker has worked from her studio in Cyprus, understanding the town through satellite imagery. Textile artist Natasha Middleton has been hanging out in the town's cafes. Dan Thompson has been wandering the back alleys, known locally as twittens, as he writes an alternative history of the town to be told through objects, text and audio. The Caravan Gallery have produced a contemporary Worthing postcard. And professional podcaster Richard Vobes is recording from his beach hut studio.

Artwork will be uncovered throughout the three day festival by a series of Tweets, secret messages in empty shops leading to hidden web pages, geocodes and messages in bottles thrown from the end of the pier. Some artwork will be physical, some virtual, and some created as viewers experience a place. The thrill is in the hunt. Go, look, find, enjoy.
