Artists & Makers Ideal for Christmas

Why buy something ordinary, when you can have original art, contemporary crafts and handmade Christmas decorations this December?

There’s the perfect opportunity to treat yourself, your friends and your family this Christmas at the annual Artists & Makers at St Matthew’s.

Sumptuous textiles, exclusive contemporary paintings and prints, designer jewellery, beautiful mosaics, handmade Christmas cards & decorations and other affordable - but unique – gifts fill the warm & comfortable interior of the church, with its distinctive ‘boat built’ wooden roof.

This year, a team of window dressers (who’ve previously worked their magic in stores on Oxford Street) will be arranging the work and hanging custom-made decorations to make Artists & Makers at St Matthew’s a winter wonderland.

Over fifteen artists are set to fill St Matthew’s with work to fit every shape and size of Christmas stocking - and work for every budget, too

Worthing Arts Centre Appeal

Would you like a space for local community arts groups? A flexible space for the needs of creative sector enterprises? Studios for artists? A central arts resource packed full of useful information and practical kit? These people would, and together have pledged £1750 to found Worthing Arts Centre!

RAG have been in discussion to take over a site near the David Lloyd Leisure Centre in Durrington. This is a portakabin-type building, with two large classrooms and smaller connecting rooms set in a fenced compound. With studios in one half of the building, a flexible workshop, rehearsal & meeting space in the other, and creative businesses based in the other rooms ... we are close to being able to launch Worthing Arts Centre.

After the success of this year's Artists & Makers Festival, which saw over a hundred artists (including special guest Dave Gorman!), Rainbow Shakespeare, Buzz Theatre, Ottakar's, and the Embroderer's Guild stage events across Worthing and Horsham District - it's time to plan for the 2007 festival.

Booking is now open for the Artists & Makers Festival 2007 ... which takes in events in Worthing, Horsham District and Littlehampton.

Formed in 2000, the group have built a national reputation for the way that they mix cutting edge art and more traditional crafts. Artists & Makers at Worthing Museum & Art Gallery continues the trend – with digital prints alongside decorated driftwood, traditional rag rugs mixed with 21st century drawing, and fine-art painting alongside funky handmade books, badges and cards.

Major Tom Supports Artists & Makers Festival

Worthing’s mayor Major Tom Wye surprised artists and guests by visiting open houses during the annual Artists & Makers Festival.

A regular visitor to open houses, Tom joined the queues of people admiring the exhibited works of creative professionals, expressed his support and chatted to artists and guests. He was treated to an exciting mix of paintings, ceramics, sculptures and textiles. The Mayor expressed his delight at the growing artistic community in Worthing, and visited a number of houses.

COURAGE Sees Special Guests Join RAG

Digital art, film and installation are amongst the exhibits when special guests join artists from RAG as a spectacular finale to the Artists & Makers Festival. Around a dozen artists will take part in the exhibition, titled ‘COURAGE’, which takes place at St Matthew’s, Tarring Road, Worthing.

Guests include Dave Gorman, who will be exhibiting photography, and Southampton artist Mark Gaynor. And KLF collaborators Gimpo & Blacksmoke will show a short film, ‘DLR’.

The exhibition also includes video art by controversial Nathan Bean, and an installation by Dan Thompson. Alex Dipple will have a range of work on show. Naomi Clark will be exploring the nature of daydreams through a series of performances and written pieces.

And Brighton-based Ingrid Plum, who exhibited 1000 origami birds in an installation at Embassy Court during the Brighton Festival, will have an unusual large-scale work in the exhibition.

Make A Beeline To Hitchcocks … There’s A Buzz About A New Theatre Company (And A Sting In The Tale)

Buzz Theatre, the newest professional theatre company in Sussex, is performing it's first play on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th July as part of the Artists & Makers Festival.

The play, 'Reach', by Suzanne Heathcote, is the first in a series of short 'Overheards', a type of theatre the company is developing in which the audience appear to 'overhear' a conversation in the place and at the time that it might actually happen - in this case in Hitchcock's Cafe and Restaurant on the seafront, opposite the pier at Worthing.

Artists & Makers Festival at Horsham Library

It's even easier to find out about his year's Artists & Makers Festival, with over 30,000 leaflets in circulation around West Sussex - and an eye catching display at Horsham Library.

The display, co-ordinated by artists Veronique Cowan-Goessant and Deborah Timperley, showcases 14 open houses, studios and gardens across Horsham District. A further 13 venues are open in Worthing.
