Shop Window For Artists & Makers Festival

It’s now even easier to find out about the Artists & Makers Festival, thanks to the support of Ottakars, Worthing’s newest bookstore.

Ottakars will be hosting a striking window display about the annual arts festival, and be letting all their customers know about the programme of events which includes open-air Shakespeare, artists opening their houses and studios to visitors, an evening with musicians from Big Chill Recordings and West Sussex Writers’ Club’s annual ‘Day for Writers’. From July, the Montague Street store will also host a year-round ever-changing exhibition of West Sussex artists work, organised by RAG.

RAG artist Sheila Guyatt will design the Artists & Makers Festival window display, in store from Saturday 2nd July. Trained at St Martin’s School of Art, Sheila’s creations have previously graced windows in London’s Oxford Street and major stores in Brighton.

Artists & Makers Festival: Full Programme Announced

"Welcome to the Artists & Makers Festival: a month of the best contemporary arts, literature and music at venues across Worthing & Horsham.

You’ll meet the best West Sussex artists & makers as they open their houses and studios; enjoy magical evenings with Rainbow Theatre at Highdown Gardens; spend a day with the Textile Arts Forum as they stuff the Heene Community Centre full of fabric and stitches; put pen to paper with West Sussex Writers’ Club; join in The Big Drawing at Worthing Museum & Art Gallery and find inspiration at Sharon Miller’s popular poetry café.

If all that’s not enough, the Artists & Makers Festival is bringing some great guests to town: join anarchic artist Bill Drummond as he talks about his latest project to launch the month’s events, and the world-famous Big Chill Recordings troupe come to the Roundabout club for our Festival Finale."

RAG & Contemporary Gallery in Brighton Fringe Basement

Two contemporary arts groups from the two sides of Sussex come together for one massive exhibition in June.

The exhibition, titled ‘2’, is set to be one of this year’s most exciting, as it brings together two contemporary arts groups, from the two sides of Sussex, in one show. The two groups are artist-led organisation RAG and the contemporary gallery, which uses disused and alternative spaces. The two groups will pack the stunning Fringe Basement, at the heart of Brighton’s busy North Laine shopping area, with contemporary arts, including paintings and prints at affordable prices.

Debbie Zoutewelle at Petworth House

A popular landscape artist is exhibiting at the prestigious Petworth House Gallery.

Debbie Zoutewelle, who staged sell-out shows at boutique Worthing guesthouse The Acacia in 2003 and 2004, is exhibiting her 2005 collection at the National Trust property. The paintings have been inspired by the landscape around Petworth House, and many feature materials such as mud and clay collected in the area.

Debbie first worked at Petworth as assistant to Andy Goldsworthy, on his Moonlit Path project. Her work blends traditional painting and more modern, environmental art practices.

Artists & Makers Festival sees launch of Worthing Art Market

Worthing’s first ever art market is set to bring more than a touch of colour to the town during July's Artists & Makers Festival.

The market, which will give artists of every persuasion, a chance to sell and show their work to the public is an initiative by the Worthing First Creative Working Group and is supported by Worthing Arts Council.

“The market will publicise art as an important resource in Worthing’s regeneration scheme, as well as highlighting the town’s thriving art scene,” said Town Centre Manager, Sharon Clarke.

Cosgrove Hall Gets 'Hands On' for RAG's Postcard Extravaganza

It’s only a little thing (about 10 by 15cm actually) but a blank postcard could make a big difference during the Brighton Festival.

Two of the South Coast’s leading arts groups have teamed up, and have been inviting artists and designers to contribute original artwork on a postcard.  And contributions from the famous Cosgrove Hall film studios (including the collection of puppet hands, pictured) will go under the hammer, alongside work by some of the best contemporary artists in Sussex, at a Brighton Festival event at the New Madeira Hotel, Brighton on Sunday 22nd May.
