Portacabins become creative community space

The Architecture Foundation and the South Kilburn Neighbourhood Trust have appointed up-and-coming young designers Practice Architecture to convert empty offices in South Kilburn into a temporary community hub.

Practice Architecture will transform the former home of South Kilburn Partnership into a space hosting a variety of workshops and activities linking designers and creators with new skills from Spring 2011.

Selected from an invited shortlist of four practices, Practice Architecture will undertake the design and construction of the project, dramatically transforming both the interior and exterior of the existing one storey portacabin block into ‘The South Kilburn Studios’. Inhabiting a number of small studio units, with a large central workshop space, tenants – in lieu of rent payments – will pledge to apprentice young people from the local area, running practical workshops and helping to build portfolios in trades from fashion and textiles to joinery and painting. The project aims to bring the underused space back to life, provide skilling opportunities for local young people, and provide rent-free working studio space for promising craftspeople, artists, and designers.

From spring through to autumn 2011 the tenants, working alongside visiting professionals, will stage exhibitions and share their expertise. The façade of the building will evolve and change to advertise and update the public on the activities taking place in the studios.

Arts studios in South Kilburn

The Architecture Foundation, South Kilburn Neighbourhood Trust and Practice Architecture will be working together to transform the portacabin site adjacent to Peel Precinct into design studios. Building work will begin in February with the studios opening from April – September 2011.

Free studio spaces will be offered to designers, to support start up businesses and to open up the skills base within the area. Each resident designer or organisation will take on a local apprentice to work alongside them in their studio - sharing their knowledge and expertise. In addition, a weekly programme of practitioner-led workshops will be held here and will
be open to the general public.

Country photography workshop

Portsmouth based NeB Media are venturing out into the countryside, to the beautiful surrounds of Poacher’s Roost, West Sussex. This private small holding boasts a wide variety of birdlife, an interesting assortment of historical sites and is situated close to the evocative pine forests of Angmering Park.

Join NeB's team at Poacher’s Roost for a day of seminars, exercises, networking and a lot of messing around with cameras. Participants will start with the fundamentals of photography, then take a walk around the site, looking at different subjects, from historical artefacts to waterfowl, before breaking for a rustic lunch cooked over an open fire. In the afternoon action will move into Angmering Park, a popular spot for riders and ramblers, with work on shooting a descriptive series (a photo essay) about the area. There will be a brief stop for a civilised afternoon drink in the woods, before heading back to the Roost to review the day’s efforts.

You're Fired!

Striking, large scale, black and white vessels produced by Newcastle based ceramic artist Catherine Warwick are currently displayed at Washington Arts Centre, Sunderland as part of their ‘Taking Tea’ exhibition. This event celebrates new, decorative art and ceramics from a selection of the foremost national contemporary craft makers.

Catherine’s sculptural designs have taken 4 years to produce using a combination of slip casting and hand building techniques. Much of her inspiration has been drawn from 60’s Op artists such as Bridget Riley and explores how two dimensional optical patterns translate on to a three dimensional surface.
