Names is preoccupied with what she sees as the line between banal and sublime. The images have an autonomous aesthetic value and yet the way that they were collected is also an important consideration when regarding the series as a conceptual whole. Influences of contemporary technology and mass-media are alluded to by pixilation and exaggerated, saturated colours. The images were inspired and born out of an impulsive urge that has been systematically documented. The artist describes the camera work she used in this documentation as amateur even throwaway; photos taken with a mobile phone camera. It is not only the imposition of scale or the repetitious nature of these images that implicates a surreal narrative; it is also a pair of empty black-patent court shoes, estranged and taking on a personality of their own. Names intends to raise many questions rather than giving statements or pre-emptive answers. The artist produced them by collaging text with low ressolution prints, of William Waterhouse�s beautiful paintings found on the internet, and magazine cuttings and then enlarging them from low resolution scans. This has the effect of giving the amusing images the foreboding presence that their dark humour suggests. Another daydream and another work in which Names refers to Postmodernism, mass-production, mass-media, throwaway culture, human subjectivity and time slipping through the fingers.
