Once seen, never forgotten: combining superb musicianship with side-splitting comic genius, the New Rope String Band are truly unique entertainers, and their astonishing show comes to the Connaught Studio on 9 April (8pm).
Elements of circus, clowning, vaudeville, slapstick and sheer inspired silliness are spliced with beautiful acoustic music from various world traditions, in precision-honed yet uproarious performances that have delighted audiences from Borneo's Sarawak rainforest to the Shetland Folk Festival, and won the band a prestigious Herald Angels Award at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe.
Equally at home in tiny village halls or on major festival stages, maniac minstrels Pete Challoner, Tim Dalling and Jock Tyldesley are touring for the final time, mixing up long-time favourite routines with ever-evolving new material. From musical tennis to deconstructed nursery rhymes, Python-esque absurdism to pyrotechnics and live, interactive film, expect the hilariously unexpected.
Based in the north-east, the New Rope String Band rarely play the south of England and were last in Worthing in 2013 for a sell-out show.
"They made me laugh until I cried, and played some great music. If the Queen could knight them or something, it would be a good idea." Tim O’Brien
"Cherishably insane." HI-Arts
"I've booked the fabulous New Rope String Band consistently over two decades presenting its unique brand of musical cabaret to literally thousands of deliriously happy people. The band remains the funniest, tirelessly inventive, the daftest, the most magical bunch of mad musicians I've had the pleasure to work with! Talented theatrically, musically brilliant and joyously good for you!” Sue Roberts, Artservice
“They were a revelation – I didn’t expect them to be quite as incredible as they were. I couldn’t believe what they were doing most of the time. It defied belief. "Bob Gibbon, Director, Orkney Folk Festival
