Norwich ShopArt!

Norwich is making good use of the funding that was allocated through the Department for Communities and Local Government to support high streets and town centres through the recession by encouraging meanwhile use of empty premises in the city centre. Norwich Arts Centre has been commissioned to run the initiative on behalf of Norwich City Council. They have called the project ShopArt! and an exhibition of a rang of art in shop windows will last for 6 months from October 2010 to March 2011.

Norwich Arts Centre is now calling for submissions with a deadline of August 27th. For six months from early October ShopArt! will see at least 10 empty shop windows in Norwich city centre filled with art by local artists. Artists from all over Norfolk are invited to submit ideas to ShopArt! co-ordinator Grace Jackson with details of how they would like to fill a window.

The ShopArt! project aims to show the amount of artistic creativity in Norwich and Norfolk as well as improving the feel of the city centre and build on the work that Norwich Arts Centre is already doing to encourage and support local artists and performers.

They are looking for submissions in every style and discipline of art, including painting, photography, animation, poetry and literature, installations, sculpture, animation and other moving image forms – the only limitations really are the imaginations of the artists and the practicality of staging the work in a shop window.

Submissions are open now and the closing date is 27 August – with the winning entries announced in the Evening News shortly after. The art will be installed by Norwich Arts Centre ready for the ShopArt! opening on 8 October.

Ten winning submissions will receive £250 towards their costs. The works must be in a ‘ready to hang’ state when delivered to the shop spaces and will hang for six to nine weeks.

This project is funded and supported by Norwich City Council and Norwich City Centre Partnership through the government's Empty Shops Initiative.

Artists can submit their proposals for ShopArt! by completing an application form available from Norwich Arts Centre or by emailing Grace Jackson grace@norwichartscentre.co.uk

Shop owners/agents who would like to suggest properties to host artwork should contact Grace at the same address.
