Down Bottle Alley

There’s a ‘Bottle Alley’ in every town, but who are the people you find there, and what is a town to make of its vagrant alcoholics? As a Hastings town councillor put it, ‘no-one leaves school with an ambition to become a street drinker.’

‘Down Bottle Alley’ is a personal story, an adaptation of Brian Charles Harding’s extraordinary biography, which has proved to be an enlightening experience even for those who thought they knew all there was to know about alcoholism and vagrancy.

To celebrate the publication of local playwright Tom O'Brien's 'Down Bottle Alley', the London Irish Theatre are returning to Hastings and offering a free performance at the launch, hosted by the White Rock Hotel.

If you are a teacher or a social carer or if you are a local citizen and would like to give some thought to the causes of an all too common social problem – not to mention seeing a powerful piece of drama for free, please come along, see the play and join in the discussion which will follow.

In addition, organisers Earlyworks Press are planning to talk over some ideas about new writing and drama activities for Hastings, particularly using stories and drama as a learning tool for exploring social issues.
There will also be information and exhibits from Hastings library and Ron Nicola, creator of the Millennium Chronicle of Hastings.

'Down Bottle Alley' performance by the London Irish Theatre, director John Dunne, at the White Rock Hotel, Friday 2nd April 2pm for 2.30 performance followed by discussion and launch party. Free entry, all welcome.
