Ugly with Theatre Akimbo

Theatre Akimbo are about to launch an exciting new project for 12 to 16 yr olds in Worthing called UGLY. Over the next 3 months they will run weekly workshops in which the participants will devise their own performance piece that will run alongside Theatre Akimbo’s reprise of their 2009 Arundel Festival triumph The Ugly One, by Marius von Mayenburg, which is due to run from 2nd to 5th June 2010 at St Paul’s Centre, Worthing.

The course of 14 specially devised workshops encourages the participants to explore the themes of Marius von Mayenburg’s scalpel sharp comedy, which lifts the bandages off our society and examines the perceptions of beauty, identity and individuality which lay beneath. Through the workshop environment they will tackle questions such as - How do we look? How do we think we look? How do peers judge our looks? Are looks important to achieve success? Can looks and image change your personality? How does the media affect us? How does cosmetic surgery affect us and those around us?

Working with professional practitioners and actors using varying techniques the participants will work towards a devised piece of performance which will be presented as a double bill alongside The Ugly One.

Glenda Harkess, Theatre Akimbo’s Artistic Director says:
“UGLY is a really exciting opportunity for this age group to participate, to create, to be heard and to have a voice about a subject that really has an impact on the way they behave and treat themselves and others. We hope that at this critical stage of their development into adulthood, this project will encourage them to view things differently and challenge their perceptions of the increasingly ‘plastic culture’ that surrounds us today.”

The workshops run on Saturday mornings from 10.30am to 12 noon starting on 27th Feb, at St Pauls Centre in Chapel Road with performances on 3rd and 4th June at St Pauls Centre.

The cost of the course is £4 per session payable weekly, or the discounted rate of £50 if you pay in advance (there are options to pay half termly too). With only 20 places available – act quickly, don’t miss out.
