Musicians Get That Sinking Feeling

Stormy seas that sank a ship, five thousand tons of driftwood and Worthing beach are set to inspire some cutting-edge music  in a day run by Revolutionary Music and national organisation Contemporary Music-making for Amateurs.

Popularly known as CoMA, the new music organisation has teamed up with the music wing of the Sussex-based Revolutionary Arts Group to run a day long workshop, ending in a concert. Musicians and singers will take their inspiration from the sinking of the Ice Prince, which saw thousands of tons of pine timber washed up on Worthing beach in January.

Leading the workshop will be the director of CoMA's Sussex ensemble, Adam Swayne, who teaches at Chichester University, the Junior Royal Academy of Music and Lancing College. He will be joined by professional composer Patrick Harrex, co-founder of Brighton's Soundwaves Festival and composer-in-residence at Worthing High School.

And artist Dan Thompson (pictured) will provide images and recollections of the Ice Prince timber on Worthing beach to start the workshop.

The free workshop will be a rare opportunity for amateur musicians to explore the sound world of new music and be involved in the creation of a new contemporary work. The day will offer artistic challenges in an environment which is both encouraging and enjoyable. It takes place at St Matthew's, a stunning arts-and-craft church five minutes walk from Worthing station.

At the end of the day, the musicians will stage the world premiere performance of the new piece in a special concert which will also be free for the public to attend.

“This is a great opportunity for both local amateur musicians and contemporary music audiences,” says Revolutionary Music's Tracey Thompson, “as we bring an unusual, edgy and exciting event to Worthing.”

The workshop is one of a series of events supported by Worthing Arts Council, which aim to mark the first anniversary of the Ice Prince disaster.

The workshop takes place on Saturday 24th January at St Matthew's, Tarring Road, Worthing.
