Writing's On The Wall For Seaside Primary
The Seaside Primary School is looking to commission artists or craftspersons to make some signs based on their interpretation of the children’s design work.
Lancing's Seaside Primary School is a new school formed from a First school and Middle school which had previously been situated on two separate sites. The completion of the merge will be February 2009.
Over the past two years, two locally based artists have been working with a group of eight first and middle schools in Lancing and Sompting, including the two schools which will become the Seaside Primary School. This year, the artists have been working alongside children, parents and staff to develop design ideas for their new school. The group decided to investigate signage and have worked on an initial ideas and design phase.
A final design has not been decided as the group would like to select a maker and their specialised artform/material which will inform the final design. The team will then spend a whole day refining their ideas and designs with the support of the maker and will form the basis for the final signs. The signs can be 2 or 3D but will need to take into consideration the practicalities of being hung in a school, and will need to be long lasting.
The signs are to be hung outside each of 14 classrooms, and will incorporate the class names, such as Swordfish and Seahorse, Cormorant or Kittiwake.
The complete artists fee is £1,400 for 1 artist or £700 each for two artists, to produce 14 signs or seven signs each. The fee is inclusive of all materials, travel costs.
Applications should be made in writing and comprise a covering letter with details of why you are suitable for the commission, a full CV, and details of two referees. Please also include good visual images of your work and state whether you wish to work as an individual artist or would be happy to share the project.
Please consider that the panel for shortlisting and interview will include children.
Please also send with your application an initial pencil sketch of ideas of how you might interpret one or more of the class names, stating what materials you would consider working in.
The closing date for applications is Monday 8th December.
Interviews will be held during the week of the 12th January
The work should take place and be completed between February and April 2009, ready for the ‘Grand opening’ of the school but the date for this has not yet been decided.
Please send your application to: Jane Gordon, 5 Chatsworth Court, Riverside Road, Shoreham-by-Sea BN43 5RT or email application@artsworkshops.co.uk
