Interventions at Worthing Museum & Art Gallery
Worthing Museum and Art Gallery in collaboration with the University of Chichester welcomes an exhibition of all-new art work made in response to the museum’s permanent collection. The Studio at Worthing Museum is the venue for Intervention, one of our many special centenary events that run for 14 weeks, from 8 March – 14 June 2008.
Back in September 2007, Chris Aggs, Steve McDade, Victoria Brown, Chris McHugh, Shirley Chubb and Tim Sandys-Renton, all fine art staff from the University of Chichester, spent time browsing Worthing’s famous art, costume and toy collections.
As a result of this study day, the six senior lecturers chose the items that inspired them most, then went away to create new work in their own preferred media, in response to Worthing’s collections. Here, we display and contrast the fresh contemporary creations with the old originals.
Artefacts as diverse as paintings, drawings, dolls houses and jewellery made from human hair transform into very different photographs, prints, paintings and jewellery.
Senior lecturer and exhibiting artist, Chris Aggs, commented: “Mediating between past and present, we as artists reveal aspects of both works in an unfamiliar light”.
Intervention is at Worthing Museum & Art Gallery from 8th March - 14th June, and is open Tuesday - Saturday from 10am-5pm.
