Public Art Commission For Worthing Seafront
Worthing Seafront is undergoing a period of significant change - and a strategy for public art lies at the heart of these efforts. The strategy has been adopted after extensive lobbying by the Revolutionary Arts Group - and a landmark commission at Splash Point is welcomed by the group as the first step in the plans.

Splash Point is located on the eastern end of the seafront, in an area which has been designated as an activity zone within the 'Worthing Evolution' masterplan. New and improved play and sports facilities will be located in the activity zone. There are also proposals for new caf and restaurant facilities, with outstanding views to the sea on one side, and over the landward green space and activity areas on the other. This artwork is intended to compliment the lively atmosphere of fun and physical activity.

The artwork will
  • act as a focus of activity, playfulness and exploration
  • be a major participatory attraction on the seafront
  • be attractive to all age groups, standing as an object of beauty, as well as functioning as something which engenders fun and interaction
  • be a memorable statement attracting widespread publicity
  • be designed to be both adventurous and safe at the same time, with high quality robust concepts, materials and engineering
The project team are looking for an artist experienced in creating work on a significant scale for the public arena, comfortable with risk assessment and consultation in the design process, whilst being able to retain their artistic integrity and flare. The artist will be sensitive to the natural and built environment and as far as possible within the practical constraints of the brief they will work in a sustainable way.

The planned all inclusive budget is 70,000 but this figure is yet to be confirmed at the time of writing the brief.

Expressions of interest must be received by 1st December 2007.

Up to three artists will be shortlisted based on their past work and letter of application, and commissioned to create concept designs, with outline cost estimates, for a fee of 1000.

One artist will be selected to develop their idea to a fully costed and risk assessed detailed design stage for a fee of 5,000.

Interested artists should submit:
  • a letter of application
  • an up to date cv
  • up to ten carefully selected images of their work in good resolution jpeg format (around 300 dpi) on disc with the artists name, and a paper list of what the images show
  • any other relevant material, for example postcards or leaflets, photocopies of press coverage
Artists should send their applications to:
