Capture Streets Of Brighton In One Shot

Road, avenue, terrace or lane – the streets of Brighton & Hove are as unique as the people who live and work in them. Close knit communities thrive in residential areas of the city while, the hustle and bustle of the quirky city centre streets draws visitors from all over the world.

To celebrate ‘Streets for People’ day on Sunday September 23, Brighton & Hove City Council is looking for an image that captures the atmosphere of our unique city streets.

The lively and colourful image will be the inspiration for a giant ‘Paint by Numbers’ canvas to be created by hundreds of visitors to the car free day celebration. Throughout the day, people will be invited to colour in a section of artwork and watch a giant city street scene slowly emerge.

‘Paint by Numbers’ is being run by the council’s JourneyOn campaign in partnership with Hugh Jart, a group of artists who specialise in producing huge canvases. It will be the centrepiece of the ‘Streets for People’ event when The Lanes and New Road will transform into a traffic free, pedestrian friendly space with live music, performance and activities for everyone to enjoy.

Other attractions will include a unique village green, ‘playstreet’ with bicycle powered games and alfresco dining.

The event is part of the council’s wider JourneyOn campaign, set up to encourage people to get fit, save money and help the environment by walking, cycling or using public transport.

To enter your Streets for People photograph and win the chance to have your image painted onto the giant canvas, just visit the website. The deadline for entries is 6 September.

Of course, there is no fee or prize - just the honour of having your work shown in public! Why are artists so undervalued?
