An Exhibition of Vintage Travel Posters
London bookshop Sotheran’s is holding an exhibition of vintage travel posters from the 6th – 28th September 2007.
Extremely popular with print collectors of all ages and tastes, this exhibition of original vintage posters from the 20th century covers a vast array of travel destinations and graphic styles from 1920s and 30s Art Deco to kitsch designs of the 1960s and 70s.
These large format posters, with bold, colourful images and stylised graphics have been designed by famous artists including: Hugh Casson, Director of Architecture at the Festival of Britain and later the President of the Royal Academy; David Klein, advertisement designer for Howard Hughes and TWA for over three decades; A. M. Cassandre, one of the most sought after poster designers; Cecil Beaton, better known for his fashion photography and stage designs; and Terence Cuneo, Britain’s most famous painter of railways and official artist for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
In the early 20th century as the pursuit of leisure travel became increasingly available by train, ocean liner, and, later aeroplane, the lithographic poster became the predominant method of widespread communication. Published by governments, tourist boards, airlines and railway companies, they reveal how illustration was used to celebrate and promote travel, with artists using stylish graphics to advertise glamorous resorts.
The exhibition will also contain smaller format original hotel labels predominantly from the Art Deco period and vintage travel magazine covers.
Open 6th – 28th September, Monday - Friday 9.30am-6pm and Saturday 10am-4pm - admission is free.
