Pallant House Architect & Donor Dies

Professor Sir Colin St John Wilson, architect of the new wing at Pallant House Gallery and donor of the Wilson Gift, has died, aged 85.

Recognized primarily for his role as the architect of the British Library, Professor Wilson, who was known as Sandy to his friends and family, will perhaps be remembered equally for his recent involvement with the Pallant House Gallery new wing project. This unique, critically acclaimed build, may yet serve as the lasting memorial to the man who designed the impressive £8.6million modern extension to a grade 1 listed Queen Anne townhouse in which to permanently house his own internationally important collections of Modern British art.

Friends and staff at Pallant House Gallery today paid tribute to Wilson's major contribution to the arts, to Chichester, and to the South Coast. Stefan van Raay, Director of Pallant House Gallery, said: "It is almost impossible to imagine that the intense relationship between Sandy and everyone here at the Gallery has come to an end; more than 10 years of daily contact on architecture, art, artists and books. He was the most generous man in every sense. A joy to be with, he was a great intellectual spirit and we remember him as young forever.”

A celebration of the life of Professor Sir Colin St John Wilson will be held at Pallant House Gallery in the coming months. A book of condolences has been opened at the Gallery.
