St Georges Church, Kemp Town is the setting for an extraordinary performance which combines the exceptional talents of the young instrumental group Eclipse, flamenco dancer Gabriela Rosa and soprano, Clare Norburn. Combining music, dance and story-telling, the performance will bring the colour and warmth of Spain to Brighton this spring. One particular highlight will be a performance of the extraordinary tarantela dance, which was supposed to be a traditional cure to draw out the venom from the bite of a tarantula spider.
The event, which takes place on Friday, 30th March, is promoted by the Brighton Early Music Festival. It is a special performance to raise money for the 2007 Early Music Festival, which will take place this October and will include two live performances on BBC Radio 3. The festival celebrates the music of the past and is known for its quirky and cutting-edge events, which straddle the classical, jazz, folk and world music divide.
This concert is an event
not to be missed, enthuses Deborah Roberts, Co-Artistic Director of
the Brighton Early Music Festival. The distinctive blend of whirling
movement, dark story-telling and vibrant music will transport you to
atmosphere of a gypsy encampment.
Alongside the performance, the event will also include opportunities to
support the Brighton Early Music Festival by taking part in a raffle
and silent auction. If you want to support the festival but cant come
to the event, you can even bid online. Prizes in the raffle include
meals for two at Il Bistro and Goa Spice of Life restaurants, free
tickets to events at the Brighton Festival and Brighton Early Music
Festival and lots of signed early music CDs featuring festival artists
past and present. You can also bid for a trial harp or recorder lesson
with members of Eclipse, a serenade by local choir, Brighton Consort,
or a week at a holiday home in a medieval village in Italy. Highest bidders in the auction and winners of the raffle will be announced a week after the performance on Saturday, 7th April.
