Blue Monkey Networking Event
Artists’ Networking Event at Blue Monkey Studio, Eastbourne
22nd September 2006
The Blue Monkey Studio Networking Event was a lively, informative affair – and, if the feedback comments are anything to go by, much-needed in the area. “When is the next one?” more than one network-starved artist asked.
Overall the event was very successful. 64 people attended, including artists from Brighton, Eastbourne, Hastings, Rye, Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells. All brought information to share, projects to promote, and (best of all) essential enthusiasm to get the arts scene up and running in the area, ready to make the most of the new Cultural Centre and the Festival set to coincide with the building’s opening in early 2008.
We were able to introduce visiting artists to Hilary Lane (County Arts Officer), Penny Jones (Arts in Healthcare), Richard Beales (Towner Art Gallery), Marie Thompson (Eastbourne Borough Council Cultural Festival Co-Ordinator), Marina Casteldine (Community Arts Development Officer) and Veronica Loveless (CIBAS).
Marie Thompson gave a short introduction and was available to talk to artists during the evening as well as instigating the compilation of a list of more than 65 people interested in taking part in the Cultural Festival, 32 of whom registered an interest in taking part in an open house or other event. Penny Jones acknowledged that Arts in Healthcare has an uncertain future but reiterated her continuing enthusiasm to work with artists and to show a variety of work at the District General Hospital for as long as possible. Marina Castledine drew attention to the multimedia training on offer for artists as well as loans of equipment.
And of course all these lovely people looked at the Blue Monkey Artists’ work too, some of them even came back the next day for the Open Studio when we’d swept up the peanuts and put out more art. The Arts Council kindly gave us a grant, which prompted us to provide a simple feedback form for visitors to complete – judging by their response, maybe we should do it again?
“Enjoyed it very much and found people very friendly...”
“Very comfortable yet energetic environment. Accessible & friendly...should definitely be encouraged”
“Should be a regular, more established & high profile event”
“Really good idea!”
“More please!”
“I hope the Eastbourne art scene takes up Blue Monkey thinking”
“It was well worth attending”
“More of the same. This is so useful and informative. Good stuff”
“Very stimulating, supportive event, much needed in virgin territory of Eastbourne”
