The Build
Sussex Partnership NHS Trust is providing a modern sixty nine bed acute mental health Hospital for working age adults living in northern West Sussex and East Surrey. Langley Green Hospital will be built at Langley Green, Crawley. It will include therapy and activity spaces on and off the wards, cafe, gym, etc as well as external space.
The Sussex Partnership NHS Trust, working with art consultants Impact Art, has identified the opportunity to involve artists at a critical point in the build. The new Langley Green Hospital will serve the population of Northern West Sussex and Surrey. The Commission
The Lead Artist’s main commission will be the Entrance & Café glazing; We would expect the artist to develop applied design proposals with the Architects and the Trust (Art Group, Staff and Users.) Current specifications are enclosed as PDFs.
As part of a holistic aesthetic approach we would also expect the artist to input on flooring, wall colour and glass treatment to 1st floor glazing to the library and conference rooms.
Other Roles They will also be seen as advocates for innovation within the design team contributing to the debate on interior specifications of furniture and fixings as well as the use of interior colour with an aesthetic overview relevant for the whole hospital, with particular attention to the use of natural and other light sources, user circulation and means of wayfinding.
Lead Artist Budget Artist Fees: £6000 Production Budget: £14,000 (Production budget subject to funding application)
Lead Artist Appointment Process Initial Response shortlist for interview a. Artists to reply with a covering letter expressing their interest in the project and how they feel they can contribute. b. Enclose a current CV and statement. c. Enclose a maximum of 10 images in jpg format
Artists Timescale
• Brief sent out on 22nd August
• Responses sent in for Short listing by 14th September
• 20th or 21st September Interviews (to be confirmed) in Haywards Heath.
• Appointment start by end of September
• Build starts November 06
• Hospital service opens July 08
