Circulus: Clocks Are Like People CD
There's a lot been written
about this lot - last year they were the darlings of the music pages of the
intelligent press, their heady mix of medieval folk and prog sensibilities
caused quite a stir in the current music climate of safe safe and more safe rock
and pop.
A year has passed, and they are on to their next release, which has had quite a hard time from the press (Oh how a fickle world it is of the journo!). Some reviews have said the joke has worn thin, and the hype is over. But I beg to differ...
Clocks... is not as obvious as their debut. The Moog synth is becoming more prominent and the sound of the album is becoming more wholesome. One review said it would not please the purists..which purists? Yes it isn't as folky as the last, but they aren't strictly a folk band are they? Is it going more proggy? Well, it sounds more psychedelic, the tunes are becoming deeper, Lo takes on more of a female vocal role, not unlike Gilli from Gong, beautiful slightly ethereal whispy vocals adding to the English crispness of Michael's vocal lead.
Song of Our Despair and Willow Tree have been live staples for sometime now, and seeing them recently playing in a disused warehouse just north of Brick Lane they included many of the new tunes in their set. The crowd that follow them are an interesting bunch. Julian Cope wrote recently in the Guardian about underground music and how varied and open it was to new styles; following Circulus you find folkies, proggies, metal fans (due to the link with Lee Dorrian of doomsters Cathedral) and psyche-beat mods.
The album is out there, and if you are one of the folk purists your appetite can be sated by the traditional Bouree tune. And as before, we have a finale to round everything off with Reality is a Fantasy - a running theme if you hang out with this bunch for too long.
