New Writing Creates A Buzz

Take an artistic director with experience running Chichester Festival Theatre, the Brighton Festival and Worthing’s Connaught Theatre. Add a new short play from a writer who’s taken part in the Royal Court Theatre’s young playwright scheme. Mix in a cast of professional actors, and an unusual location in Worthing. You’ve got Buzz, a new theatre company who make their debut during the Artists & Makers Festival.

Formed by Martin Harris, a hugely experienced theatre administrator who has always wanted to start his own company, Buzz will support new writers as they develop work for unusual places. And their first piece has been commissioned from Suzanne Heathcote, an actor who has been involved in writing work performed at the legendary Royal Court Theatre in London.

The play will appear in an unusual venue in Worthing, which will only be announced in the days running up to the performances on 14th, 15th and 16th July.

Buzz will also be running a series of workshops to find writers for future productions. Through a series of workshops, Martin Harris will work with West Sussex based writers to develop short, ten minute pieces for a small cast, which will be performed by actors in a series of readings later in the year.

The debut, place-specific performances from Buzz take place on the last weekend of the Artists & Makers Festival, which also sees an exhibition of contemporary art and film, three days of events celebrating the centenary of the Embroiderers Guild and open houses, studios & gardens in Horsham district. Full details can be found in the festival guide, which is available from libraries, tourist information centres and arts venues.
