Short Stories By & For The Young in Cranbrook, Kent
Anyone interested in children's writing, or in ways of encouraging children to write, should pay a visit to the Cranbrook Big Write website. A few months ago, children from the three schools in Cranbrook, Kent - Cranbrook Primary School, Angley School and Cranbrook School - were asked to write short stories for a new project called The Big Write. The best results were published in booklet form in the spring of 2006, and they have now been made available online.

Ian Hislop, who lives locally, gave a short speech at the launch of the booklet, and quite rightly remarked that the contents are well worth reading, not just as demonstrations of how observant and creative our children can be when they're given the right encouragement, but as pieces of good writing which deserve attention in their own right. And The Big Write project itself shows how motivated children are by the thought of their work appearing in print - or online - and how literature comes alive for them when they start to think of themselves as writers.
