Artists & Makers Festival Announced

The Artists & Makers Festival is back for its sixth year. And it’s bigger, better and takes up more of West Sussex than ever before.

A range of arts events stretch across Worthing and the Horsham District and take place from 1st – 17th July.

A grant from Horsham District Council will help to develop the open houses, studios and gardens which take place during the festival, and which feature everything from contemporary textiles to painting, photography and sculpture. Venues open across the towns, villages and countryside of West Sussex.

Open houses, studios and gardens in Cowfold, Coolham, Horsham, Plummers Plain, Pulborough, Rusper, Steyning, Warnham, and Worthing, will showcase the work of contemporary artists, makers and designers – many with a national profile for their work.

Other visual arts events include a Textile Arts Trail around Worthing town centre, an exhibition by students of popular art teacher Emily Ball and the launch of a Manga Collectors Club. Last year’s Artists & Makers Festival featured over 80 artists and even more are expected to take part this year. Organisations involved in the festival include RAG, the Textile Arts Forum, 2 by 4 Studios, the Embroiderers Guild and Ottakars.

“We’ve concentrated the Festival programme into three weeks this year,” says founder Dan Thompson, “making sure that the first half of July is packed full of things to see and do.”

The Artists & Makers Festival also includes a programme of music, poetry, performance and literature. More events are still being confirmed, and a full guide will be available in early June.

Open Houses Extra
Authored by: Dan on Monday, July 03 2006 @ 09:46 PM UTC
This weekend (8th & 9th July) is the last weekend for open houses in Worthing, and the first of two weekends for Horsham District open houses.

There are some late additions to the line up which are worth a mention. Nathan Bean at 87b Chapel Road, Worthing (next to the old Rivoli Pub site which is being redeveloped) has sadded ome great frames and mirrors from Alex Dipple, and digital work by Goldsmith's student Naomi Clark, to what's listed in the guide. Both worth checking out.

Here at Thompson Towers, 18 Chancton View Road, Worthing we're adding plants for sale in the back garden this weekend.

And in Horsham, there's an extra house - Endel White was already on the trail, opening his house at 124 Clarence Road, Horsham. His neighbour is RAG sculptor John Wincentzen and he'll be opening on 8th, 9th and 16th  July ... with a  full-size cow in his front drive. One not to miss...

Open houses are open 2-6pm. And thanks to Horsham District Council for their support.
