University of Chichester Offers £18k Commission

The University of Chichester intend to commission a sculpture with a budget £18,000.

The University of Chichester offers degrees in Fine Art, Music, Dance, Performing Arts, Digital Media, Media Arts, Creative Writing as well as other Humanities and Science subjects ... and has a strong history of collecting Modern Art.

The Otter Collection, managed by the Otter Gallery, has works by Heron, Hockney, Hitchens,  Moore, Nash, Piper, Rie, Sickert, Sutherland, Spencer and others. It also has large-scale public sculpture works by Geoffrey Clarke and John Skelton, and an enormous Lurcat tapestry, woven at Aubusson in France.

Chichester itself has a long tradition of artistic activity. The recently refurbished ‘Pallant House Gallery’ has an excellent reputation, there is the Cass Sculpture Foundation (Sculpture at Goodwood), Chichester Festival Theatre, the ‘Chichester Open Art exhibition’, Chichester Festivities, and the Festival of Speed. The Cathedral has a rich collection of art, including a Piper tapestry and a Chagall window.

Rolls Royce Ltd have built a new factory in Westhampnett, Chichester, funding the sculpture commission through a section 106 agreement. They do not expect the commission choice to reflect their involvement in terms of subject matter or materials.

The commission is to be sited on the Bishop Otter Campus, either:

  • Outside the Fine Art building, ‘artOne’, on the grass. ‘artOne’ is a modern building, mainly silver in colour. The space might favour a large-scale sculpture or landscaped work.
  • Another site identified by the Artist (subject to negotiation).

The piece (or series of pieces) should provide an engaging focal point or landmark in the University campus. The work should generate local and regional attention, and promote the idea that public art can be aesthetically adventurous. It should also display sensitivity to the context of the University environment.

The final commission payment includes 2 days teaching in the Fine Art department and/or equivalent community involvement.

University of Chichester Fine Art facilities and workshops may be used by negotiation (eg Ceramic kilns, welding equipment, woodworking equipment, workshop space), possibly subject to a charge.

This is an Open Competition. From initial submissions, three artists will be selected and paid £800 to work up a proposal. One artist will be chosen to produce the final work.

The maximum £18000 will cover artist’s fees (net of VAT), production, engineer’s report, landscaping as required (design and works), site visits (including 2 teaching days), insurance, delivery and installation. The work must be shown to have a life of at least 10 years.
