Open Houses in Brighton and Hove

The Artists' Open Houses in Brighton and Hove take place the first two weekends of December this year (3rd and 4th, 10th and 11th), so as not to clash with the Art Fair, and there are more of them than ever this Xmas 33 to be exact! Most are open 11am to 6pm, but grab a brochure and check before making a special journey.

Highlight has to be the exhibition of Brian Grimwood's prints at The Dragonfly House [48 Ditchling Rise, BN1 4QN], which includes a homage to Alfred Wallis. Miss Betty Bib will also be on show, and signing her 'Fairy Field Guide' book. As well as all the fantastic stained glass stars, button jewellery and ceramics, you may find some linocuts by yours truly hidden away in a dark corner somewhere!

In the next street [24 Yardley Street, BN1 4NU], don't miss John Dilnot's amazing and collectable bird and moth boxes, artists' books and hand-printed cards. Only open the first weekend.

Carol Seatory will have papier-mache model heads and Christmas cards on sale at Mel's Christmas Open House [14 Southdown Avenue, BN1 6EG], as well as pictures on show and yet more Christmas cards on sale at The Wheatsheaf pub in central Worthing right NOW! Jo Moore is also on show at Mel's with no doubt lots of tales to tell of her world tour. Not far away, Angela McKay [59a Springfield Raod, BN1 6DF] has free mince pies, courtesy of Waitrose, to savour as you peruse her gorgeous watercolours.

Further into Fiveways, RAG member Nick Orsborn, Karren Urben and Shirley Trevena will be showing their paintings at73 Stanmer Villas. And at 257 Preston Drove, check out Anne Hale's botanical prints and cards, and Nicola Jackson's paper things.

Jonny Hannah fans will be making for Judy Steven's house [6 Clifton Street, BN1 3PH] where the host's woodcuts and linocuts will also be on show, with Peter Chrisp's always quirky collectables, this year 'unusual Xmas tree decorations' and Chloe Alexander's preserves.

Over in Hove, Sam Toft's Brown Dog Studio [12 Chapel Mews, BN3] is always worth a look-in, as is Kim Glass's Glass House [3 Silverdale Road], and next door at No 5 you'll find Andrew Kingham and Liz Toole, amongst many others. She's also in the studio exhibition at 14 Cross Street, BN3 1AJ on the 16 and 17 December.

The New England House sale takes place between the weekends on Thursday 8 and Friday 9 December, 12-8pm. Bargains galore to be found! On show include: Jehane Boden Spiers (textiles), Mary Fellows (ceramics), Angela Evans (ceramics), Ken Eardley (ceramics), Annika Rutkin (jewellery), Sukie (hand-printed notebooks), Bob & Blossom (baby clothes) & more. Mulled wine and mince pies also abundant... and free!

Open Houses in Brighton and Hove

I've just been looking through the brochure and there are some great open houses.

Maria Tribe's work [First Floor, 106 Coleridge Street] is always good. The Brighton Central Gallery at 2 North gardens has a whole host of people I like - Caroline Brown, Michelle Dawson, Danny Noble and the excellent Sam Lock.

Liz Toole [5 Silverdale Road] and Linda McVeigh [3 Florence Road], and John Dilnot [24 Yardley Street] all make lovely, touchy-feely, arts-crafty stuff.

And of course ... Nick Orsborn's Palace of Delights [73 Stanmer Villas] is full of fantastic stuff.
