This was a happy find indeed! Project Telstar is an anthology of comic stories and related art created around the theme of robots. Sounds great dunnit! Yes, it is. An absolutely delightful collection of stories in different styles showing the many themes and moods the graphic novel is able to communicate.
From start to finish the quality is superb. It proves what I have always said, that the graphic novel displays the wonderful 'bookishness of books.' You cannot translate these stories into film or literature. They are beautiful drawings put down onto pages made up into a book.
The quality isn't confined purely to the illustration. The production values are very high with a beautiful four colour illustration on the cover, matt laminated with curved corners. (Thinks: there's probably a technical term for that answers on a post card please).
The pages are printed in two colours black and a metallic blue. That's metallic ink not cheap, but it works quite spectacularly.
There are some obvious influences on display here too. Paul Hornschemeier's 'We were not made for this' looks like David Ware and there are more than a few Dylan Horrocks on display, but so what.
Among the nice interludes are the portfolios including some powerful manga influenced work from the Plankton Art Co.
Buy it for yourself and have a book you will want to treasure forever. Published by ad house books. And, by the way, the Reverend loves it. |
