Hatfield and the North - Mean Fiddler, March 18th.
Spending the morning staring at Turner , Whistler and Monet and getting bored I was in the mood for some eclectic mind lengthening entertainment.
Up pops Hatfield and the North. Now, to name your artistic creation after a road sign must be a good idea - (remember Orme Road fanzine, Dan?), and tonight was all rather incestuous really....
Richard Sinclair (of Caravan and stalwart of the Canterbury music scene) came on with Theo Travis and gave us flute and guitar appetisers in the shape of Caravan's 'The Land of the Grey and Pink' amongst other. Then, on came members of In Cahoots, and they joined in, Richard soon leaving, allowing In Cahoots to take over the driving seat and swerve about like that other well known road sign, chord changing, tempo changing Jazz rock with screeching sax and trumpet.
Richard comes back later with Hatfield and the North, including Pip Pyle on drums, and oh, that bloke fron In Cahoots on guitar. A weird sound, Richard sounds like he's telling stories over a deep bass driven, strong guitar and sax lead.....but then, this is the bit I like, we take a slip road off into a 10 minute country lane of wig out jazz rock......Nice(!)
This is the groove from now on, and after grooving my head from side to side I notice that if I remove my specker-tackles, I can see blobs of colour, darkness and light, but no detail, like I'm at the Tate again.....
