Staunton Country Park is a beautiful site set in Havant on the South coast of Hampshire. As well as an ornamental farm, a glass house boasting one of Britain's largest lilies and Victorian follies the Park is home to some spectacular woodland.
As part of the ongoing development of the Park new pathways and walks are being landscaped in to the woodlands. The aim is to create an environment where visitors can take in the beauty of the Park and for the pathways to highlight interesting views, plant and animal life. The ambition is that the pathways and walks will be interactive providing spaces both for contemplation as well as performance, exhibitions and education work. Staunton Country Park is working in partnership with Making Space, Havant Arts Active, Havant Borough Council Arts Office and Creative Hampshire to explore the huge potential the pathways present.
BriefWe are looking for one or more artist/makers to work in residence at Staunton for an initial period of 3 to 6 months to develop ideas and create work that will remain at the Park on a permanent basis. The working schedule will be agreed with the selected artist/maker and a space will be available at Staunton to work. The interactive walks offer the potential to work in areas such as signage, seating/furniture, sculpture and landscape art. The work should be inspired by the surroundings at Staunton. Where possible you should use the materials available from the Park. These may include various timbers including oak, coppicing and reclaimed bricks. The finished works should elevate the walks, enhancing the visitors’ experience and contributing positively to the landscape and heritage of the Park. Staunton has a rich history and exciting future that we hope you will exploit fully to inform your work.
Clients
You should be prepared to work closely with Staunton’s education team and Making Space as community interaction and input are vital aspects to the project. You will be required to work with school groups from primary to secondary age. You may be required to visit local schools. Other community groups who use the Park may also be interested in participating in the project. As artist/maker in residence you should be prepared to be accessible for some proportion of the time you are on site for questions and comments from visitors. You should also be prepared to hold workshops with support from the Project Team, give demonstrations and possible talks.
Should more than one artist/maker be selected for the project you will be expected to work together
Your Proposal
Ideally you should have some experience of working on projects of a similar nature. A site visit is highly recommended before you submit your proposal to gain a feeling for the Park. This can be organised by contacting Lewis Paterson, Park Manager on 023 92 453405 or email lewis.paterson@hants.gov.uk. The brief is deliberately broad as we are interested in your impressions and ideas at this stage. Should your proposal be accepted a more formal plan of work will be agreed. Your proposal should contain the following
A written outline of what you intend to produce. Please include rough costings for material expenses, and your fee. (We anticipate these are likely to change)
At least one initial idea for a piece of sculpture, furniture, signage or landscape art with explanatory sketches and notes. (The piece should be bespoke and not a catalogue item.)
5 images of your own work to include any relevant previous commissions.
(These can be on CD Rom, emailed jpegs, slide or high quality photographs.)
A current CV
Two references. (One of whom should be a previous client where possible.)
